Mpumalanga Lowveld: Educational Walking Trails
In association with EcoTraining, I am able to offer walking trails over a period of 6 nights and 5 full days in the Selati Game Reserve. Selati is situated in a beautiful wilderness area with diverse topography and biodiversity, including dangerous animals (but no buffalo).
The group of 8 trailists stay in an unfenced tented camp from which the walking trails are conducted twice each day. The focus is on enjoying and interpreting nature in a wilderness environment in its broadest sense. To help achieve this a number of nature theory modules are presented and knowledge is shared in open discussion. However, trails can focus on birds and be tailored for birders – bushveld birding on foot. Walking can be up to 6 hours per day so a reasonable level of fitness is necessary.
Accommodation is in simple tents each with 2 camp beds. Bathroom facilities are shared and there is a central communal area. There is no electricity and paraffin lamps are used for all lighting. Together with the open layout and design of the facilities this enhances the overall wilderness experience. A small generator is available to charge camera and cell phone batteries.
Food is provided, and prepared by the camp staff. Soft drinks and beer can be purchased.
Important items are your binoculars, camera, and reference books. This is a malaria area and adequate precautions are recommended.
A classroom in the wilderness – the best way to do it.
