The common thread in all Accipiter’s trails and activities is an educational element, consistent with Johna’s philosophy of providing enhanced wilderness experiences.  Nature is not compartmentalised, and there are always exceptions to the rules of nature.  Understanding nature is a never-ending process, the more one learns, the more one realises how little they know.

Education is about this continuous learning process, and is incorporated on an informal basis primarily.

Unravel the ecology of Makuleke in a six night course based at EcoTraining's rustic unfenced tented camp in the far northern Kruger National Park. This area between the Luvuvhu and Limpopo Rivers is a wilderness of amazing diversity, and one of the few true wildernesses remaining in South Africa.

The course examines the unique ecology of the area, integrating the diverse geology and climate (including the floods of 2013) with the spectacular topography, vegetation and animals. The focus is on all aspects of the ecology - biotic and abiotic, the functional relationships, and the wildlife both big and small. Visits to the different habitats will be structured as morning and afternoon walking trails, and informal short lectures in the middle of the day on the different facets of the ecology will be presented. The movement of Makuleke's elephants and their role in the ecosystem will be explained by Dr Michelle Henley, an acknowledged expert on elephant behavior who has managed the Makuleke elephant tracking program.

This course is ideal for anyone who has a basic knowledge of nature and wants to get a greater "hands on" appreciation of ecology. A reasonable level of fitness is required.

This course is limited to 8 guests to ensure a superior and personal experience. The cost is inclusive of accommodation, meals, game drives, guides and all activities.

An optional series of 4 evening lectures on ecology is also included. These take place prior to the Makuleke practical course in the Johannesburg area. Please contact us for information on lecture dates.
